Copyright

Authors and publishers and others who wish to quote from the works of W. H. Auden may arrange for copyright permissions through the sources listed on this page.

Important note on permissions: The Estate of W. H. Auden cannot legally grant permission to quote or reprint works by Auden that are currently in print in editions published by Random House, as described below. Auden's contracts with Random House gives Random House the sole right to grant permission to quote poems and prose included in its editions. Please do not write to the Estate to ask permission to quote any of Auden's works that are in print with Random House; the Estate has no legal right to give such permission.

For works by Auden that are currently in print in editions published by Faber & Faber or by Princeton University Press, please contact Curtis Brown Ltd. in New York, as described below.

For permissions to quote from unpublished manuscripts and letters only: Please write to the Literary Executor of the Estate of W. H. Auden, Edward Mendelson (edward dot mendelson at columbia dot edu). Please do not write to this address for permission to quote from published work by W. H. Auden; for all such permissions, see the sources listed below.

Photographs of W. H. Auden: Please note that the Estate of W. H. Auden has no control over photographs and other images of Auden. The Estate has no right to grant permission to reproduce any photographs of Auden and cannot supply photographs of Auden for publication. All rights to all photographs of Auden are the property of the original photographers or their representatives.

Important note on permissions fees: The publishers, and only the publishers, determine the fees that will be charged for quoting for works under their control; and the publisher, not the Estate, receives fees and keeps a large proportion of the fees. The Estate does not determine the fees charged by the publisher; the Estate has no knowledge of, and no influence over, the fees that publisher chooses to charge. The publishers have made extremely clear that they do not want the Estate's advice on fees and will not be influenced by such advice. The Estate cannot legally waive permission fees that the publishers would otherwise receive. Please do not write to the Estate to ask permission to quote Auden's works without paying a fee that would otherwise be collected by the publisher; the Estate has no legal right to give such permission.
